GRODNO, 21 November (BelTA) – Grodno Oblast libraries have received 19 sets of the first five volumes of the facsimile collection published as part of the Francysk Skaryna Heritage project, BelTA learned from director of the Karsky Scientific Library of Grodno Lidia Maltseva.
The five volumes are the first books of the canonical Old Testament, the so-called Five Books of Moses.
The facsimile editions were created using the digital copies of the original books by Francysk Skaryna from the museums and libraries of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, and Germany. The editions are accompanied by biographical information about Francysk Skaryna and the modern translation of the original foreword and afterword to his books into Belarusian, Russian, and English.
"This is a unique project. The facsimile editions are similar to the original books by the format, cover, and the color of the paper. The organizers of the project tried to find the best-preserved pages to make the facsimile editions clear and readable," Lidia Maltseva said.
The editions will be available to the readers at the local history section of the regional scientific library, the Grodno central library, and the main libraries of all the districts of Grodno Oblast.
The project to create facsimile editions of all Francysk Skaryna's books was launched in 2013 and will be finished in 2017, the year when Belarus will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first East Slavic printed book. All in all, the facsimile copies of 25 books in 20 volumes will be published and kept in the libraries and museums of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Germany and other countries.
In the world there are 360 printed and 43 manuscript books by Francysk Skaryna. The Belarusian National Library has ten Skaryna's books in six covers.
